Having a good level of energy doesn’t always come naturally, yet it’s so important for leaders. A good level of energy gives us the fuel to perform well. A low level of energy puts us in ‘underperformance zone’.  Less enthusiasm, more procrastination, less great ideas, more time needed to get things done, less power to influence others… In addition, our energy level is contagious – reasons enough to pay attention to it…

5 tips for successful change management

Here are 5 things we typically do to ensure a good level of energy throughout the day.

  1. Start your day with a ‘power ritual’: get in the habit of spending 5 minutes each morning to set yourself up for a great day. You could spend these 5 minutes to reflect upon what would make you happy at the end of the day. Or to visualize yourself acting and interacting at your peak. Whatever. Just prepare your mind for a great day full of energy.
  2. Listen to upbeat music: music can do wonders! But not all music. So many songs are beautiful but depressing… The good news is, there are also songs that get you in a great mood. Try it out: check which type of music lifts you up. And when you’re in your car, or when you’re low on energy, listen to that type of music. It’s so powerful!
  3. Spend a couple of minutes outside: go for a small walk. We all know it allows to breathe in fresh oxygen. But there’s more: it’s during the moments of ‘mind wandering’ that we get our best creative ideas. So when you feel your brain is ‘full’ – go outside. You’ll notice it yourself: these small breaks are an investment with a great ROI!
  4. Give a compliment to somebody else: complimenting others not only provides energy to those on the receiving end. It also benefits the giver. Seeing the recipient smile, knowing they will cherish the compliment (even if at first they don’t know how to react). So potent! So energizing!
  5. Add some fun to your work: the work you have to do today is not very fulfilling? You’re not looking forward to accomplishing the things on your to do-list? Add something novel. Do something unexpected. Put an extra challenge in it, one that excites you. Decide to take a different approach. Anything will do.

Regularly act on these 5 tips, and you’ll notice your energy going up.
Good luck!
